What device is more energy efficient: a portable air conditioner or heater oil filled column?

I live in Sydney and my electricity bill for the past 3 months was huge. I'm surprised at the cost of electricity and I am looking for ways to reduce my bill. I live in a rental unit without gas, so a gas heater is not an option. We have an oil filled column heater and I wonder if this device is to blame for the bill rising, as it has kept on for long periods of time in these cold days.We are thinking of buying a portable air conditioner in the hope that consume less energy than heating oil as it heats the room quickly, but I'm not sure, since it is common sense conditioners air using a lot of energy too! I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks. :)

In fact, is the department that handles the high electric bill. Your heater is working hard because the apartment leaks cold. If you use an air heater (as opposed to radiant heating, as oil heater), which would still be pumping hot air in the room constantly. The first would deal with the leak first, to reduce seepage penetration of heat from space. Seal windows with caulk or wrapping those transparent window covers, hanging curtains / tapestry / picture frames on their walls bare to essentially add more insulation in your walls, close all doors to reduce the need to heat the entire floor at once. Then I would consider the oil / c question. If you live alone, I recommend a hot air, not because it is more efficient, but is more effective as you may have to fly to you, warming up instead of the house, then. If you're sharing the place, then oil heater heats up in community, and would be the best option. Regardless of choice, keep the heat near the center of the room to heat the space, instead of the walls and floor, and pass the heat to each room to keep the space you need to heat small. Alternatively, in fact I suggest that frequent local mall / library / interior public spaces more frequently, so to reduce energy use in the country and "use" the heat is always locally common and public areas. Bring some snacks and drinks and settle in a nice place for people to see, read, etc. All these should have an effect on your energy bill. Good luck!
